2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid TRD Pro
Take advantage of electricity
Off-road driving enthusiasts should find the Tundra Hybrid, equipped with the TRD Pro package, a good ally. However, will they have the courage to go off the beaten track with their $90 vehicle?
The full-size pickup weighing around 2 kg seeks to compete with vehicles from the American “boys' club”, made up of the Chevrolet Silverado 700 ZR1500, Ford F-2 Raptor, RAM 150 Rebel (RHO in 1500) and GMC Sierra 2025 AT1500X. However, the Japanese manufacturer scores points by using a hybrid engine.
To pull the beast out of its inertia, Toyota uses a 6L twin-turbo V3,5 whose capacity, combined with the electric motor housed between the engine and the transmission, reaches a power of 437 horsepower and a torque of 583 lb-ft . It is connected to an efficient 10-speed automatic transmission. This Tundra moves with unwavering conviction, while emitting a muscular sound reminiscent of a V8. The vehicle can tow a load of up to 5 kg (067 lb). According to Natural Resources Canada measurements, the van consumes an average of 11L/000 km under normal conditions. But it doesn't take much to increase it by 12,3 or 100L/2 km. In the case of this engine, the main advantage is essentially to support performance more than to reduce gasoline consumption.
Based on a solid architecture, the van behaves on the road with great competence. It nonetheless remains a vehicle built first and foremost to play adventurers. If the Fox suspension reacts with a certain firmness – vocation requires, it does not prevent this Tundra from providing balanced behavior.
You have to love full-size pickup trucks to appreciate them for their true value. Bulky, energy-consuming, more or less inspiring to drive, they nevertheless have their uses. The Tundra aims to be a serious competitor, and the presence of a hybrid engine helps make it even more interesting. The TRD Pro group only transforms it into a toy for big boys or girls, it depends.
